How to Create a Product in Magento

In order to create or add products to your Magento store, you must first understand what configurable and simple products are. The core difference between a configurable and simple product in Magento 2 is that configurable products allow customers to choose variations (e.g., size, color) using multiple underlying simple products, while simple products are individual items with a single SKU and no selectable options. Configurable products are essential for tracking inventory for each variation, whereas simple products are best for uniform, non-variant items.

Feature Simple Product Configurable Product
SKUs Single SKU Multiple SKUs (one per variant)
Inventory Tracked for the single item Tracked per variation
Customer Sees   None (just quantity) Dropdowns/Swatches (Size, Color)
Structure Standalone Parent product with child simples
Best For Items without variation Items with variations

Simple Product
A simple product is a physical item with a single, unique SKU, such as a book, a bottle, or a non-variant T-shirt. It is the most basic product type and does not allow customers to select variations like size or color on the product page.
  • Inventory: Tracks total quantity for that single SKU.
  • Use Case: Use for items that don't change based on customer selection.
Configurable Product
A configurable product appears to the customer as a single product with dropdown lists or swatches, but it is actually a "parent" container for multiple "child" simple products. For example, a "T-shirt" configurable product might have child products for "Red-Small," "Red-Large," "Blue-Small," etc..
  • Inventory: Tracks the inventory of each child simple product individually, allowing you to know when "Small-Red" is out of stock while "Large-Red" is still available.
  • Use Case: Use for products with variations that require individual inventory management.
Key Functional Differences
  • Inventory Tracking: Configurable products enable inventory tracking for every variation (child product), whereas a simple product with custom options cannot track individual inventory.
  • Product Structure: A configurable product acts as a parent that links to multiple simple products.
  • Visibility: Simple products can be set to "Not Visible Individually" and hidden from the catalog while being part of a configurable product.
  • Pricing: Configurable product prices are derived from their child products.
